The microwave oven has got to be one of the best inventions of modern times, but did you know that if radiation leakage is present, a microwave can be dangerous to the health of you and your staff?

All this poses another question - when was the last time you checked your microwave oven for radiation leakage?

Whenever a microwave oven is turned on, radioactive energy is produced which causes the water molecules in the food to vibrate rapidly. This rapid vibration produces heat within the food, which in turn, cooks the food.

The energy produced by a microwave oven can also penetrate through living tissue which is why exposure is harmful to our health.

Once you turn off the oven, the microwaves disappear but until then, you may be exposing yourself to dangerous levels of radiation leakage.

A survey conducted among the Professional Service Associates, (a group of United States microwave repair servicemen), indicated that over 56% of microwave ovens two years or older leaked levels of radiation 10% higher than the safety standards.

More often than not, a simple adjustment was all that was needed to stop the leakage.

Slamming the oven door, dirt or food particles caught in the door seals and hinges, or basic wear and tear all cause the oven door to slightly separate from the oven enclosure. Once this happens, invisible, but highly dangerous microwaves leak through the small space and cause irreversible damage and injury to the user.

ETS provide a Microwave Oven Radiation Leakage Service to test your microwave oven for leakage under the Australian Standard AS3350.2.25.

By having the microwave ovens on your premises inspected and tested, your organization will be:

Fulfilling its obligation under Section 8 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2000. As per Australian Standard AS3350.2.25 clause 32 in regards to microwave radiation emission levels.

Exercising its “DUTY OF CARE” regarding microwave radiation.

Protecting the organization from any possible liability claims.

Eliminating any “Perceived Risk of Injury” in respect to microwave radiation.

We conduct a
4-point safety check on each microwave oven on your premises to ensure that Australian Standards are being met. The microwave test include:

Electrical Safety Test: ensures microwave ovens are compliant to AS3760 (PAT test is performed)

Physical Damage Inspection to ensure correct functioning and safety as per AS3760 & AS3350.2.25

Power Output Inspection: measures the wattage of the oven to ensure that the electrical flow and magnetron of the unit are operating at respectable levels. As per AS3350.2.25

Radiation Leakage Inspection: involves the measurement of radiation levels around the oven using an advanced microwave oven survey meter to ensure they are below limits specified in AS3350.2.25. (Please note domestic radiation leakage detectors DO NOT comply with OH & S specifications for testing equipment).

Upon completion of testing, a certification label (indicating radiation and power levels) will be place on the front of the oven. A certification tag (for AS3760) and barcode tag (for tracking purposes) will be placed on the power lead and a detailed inspection report will be provided.
